Electronic commerce (ecommerce) is a type of business model, or segment of a larger business model, that enables a firm or individual to conduct business over an electronic network, typically the internet. Electronic commerce operates in all four of the major market segments: business to business, business to consumer, consumer to consumer and consumer to business. It can be thought of as a more advanced form of mail-order purchasing through a catalog. Almost any product or service can be offered via ecommerce, from books and music to financial services and plane tickets.

Experts do not offer a single idea but many of them agree that e-commerce began with drug trade. According to The Guardian, In 1970s ,Stanford students sold a bag of drugs to students studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology using Arpanet calculations and the schools artificial intelligence laboratory. Technically, this is the first shopping using a network, but in 1994, Pizza Hut carries the honor of being the first e-commerce company on account of the fact that they sold pizza over the internet to a single person.
How E-Commerce Develops ?
There are many factors that influence the growth of e-commerce. At the top of these are the population size, internet usage, payment systems, logistics development are the most important points. The number of Internet users in our country was 36 million in 2011 but now the number of internet users has reached 50 million. Turkey is the 6th largest internet population of Europe and having a large and young population allows us to be much more adaptable to innovations and new Technologies like e-commerce.

Global e-commerce volume is increasing every year.For example , internet transaction volume was 900 billion dollars in 2011, it reached 3,5 trillion dollars in 2019 . The most important countries in this sector USA and China but France, Italy, Spain, Turkey ,Russia, Poland, Brazil and Mexico are increasing their market share in this sector.For example , Turkey internet transaction volume was 3,5 billion in 2012 but it reached 59,9 billion in 2018.
E-commerce is growing fast and if countries want to increase their shares in this market, they should invest more and we should know that rise of e-commerce is inevitable.
